An ECM recording artist, bandleader and composer, Andy Sheppard is one of Europe’s leading saxophonists and one of a very few British musicians to have made a significant impact on the international jazz scene, playing and writing for settings from solo to big band and chamber orchestra. Sheppard has composed over 350 works that incorporate a strong and characteristic sense of lyricism alongside a very personal use of rhythms from Asia, Africa and South America.
Of Hotel Bristol: “ a kicking groove orientated band playing all original music bursting with melody and high energy improvisations, straight out of the Scofield/Lovano legacy.â€
Sheppard formed this band with Denny Ilett in Bristol so as to have a Bristol based band to take to the Tbilisi International Jazz Festival in Georgia as part of an exchange programme with Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival. This concert was a resounding success and the band has gone on to play many storming gigs around the UK. Hotel Bristol also headlined at London Canary Wharf Festival in the summer 2014 and Liverpool International Jazz Festival 2016.
He said, “I specifically wrote over an hour of new music for this line up with the special talents of the individual musicians in mind (Percy’s trumpet playing is our secret weapon!). I love playing with this exciting band – the perfect foil to my ECM Quartet.â€
